Turn on the tap and smell the sharp “bleach” odor? That’s the free chlorine your utility adds to keep water safe in the pipes—yet while it kills germs, it quietly attacks skin, hair and lungs. How can we keep the disinfection, but strip the chlorine the instant water reaches the point of use? The answer is a small white strip most people never see: ZONE Calcium Sulfite Strip.
1. Residual Chlorine: The Invisible Offender
- What is residual chlorine?
Before leaving the plant, drinking water is dosed with sodium hypochlorite or chlorine gas so that ≥ 0.05 mg/L of free chlorine is still present at the farthest tap. Excess or long-term exposure can:
– Destroy the skin barrier, causing eczema and itching
– Leave hair dry, brittle and quick to lose color
– Generate trihalomethanes (THMs), a group of suspected carcinogens
- Global limits vs. reality
China’s GB 5749-2022 sets ≤ 2 mg/L at the plant and ≥ 0.05 mg/L at the tap; the U.S. EPA recommends < 0.1 mg/L in shower water and “not detectable” for infants. In most Chinese cities, however, tap chlorine is 0.3–0.8 mg/L and can exceed 1 mg/L at peak times. Heating water for a shower accelerates chlorine release into the air you breathe.
2. Common Chlorine-Removal Media Compared

3. ZONE Strip: Fast, Accurate, Stable
- ≥ 90 % food-grade CaSO₃
Meets EU E226 and Japan JECFA additive limits; heavy-metal leaching “not detected”.
- 0.1-second reaction
At 2 L/min, 1.2 mg/L inlet Cl₂, outlet < 0.01 mg/L—10× stricter than national standard.
- 10 g treats 1 200 L
Enough for a 3-person family’s bathing for 6 months; spent media adds < 8 mg/L Ca²⁺, far below natural hardness fluctuation.
- -20 °C – 100 °C safe window
Works with under-floor heating exchangers or 95 °C instant heaters; no softening or collapse.
- Strip shape = 30 % more surface
Higher packing density, 18 % longer hydraulic residence, yet 20 % lower pressure drop—ideal for high-flow shower heads.
4. One Strip, Many Uses
- Shower filters: 0.1 s chlorine removal, protects babies’ delicate skin
- Instant water heaters: 100 °C tolerant, no dusting or clogging
- RO pre-treatment: combined with PP & carbon, prolongs membrane life
- Swim-spas: rapidly destroys combined chlorine, wipes out “chlorine smell”
- Coffee & ice machines: stops chlorine taint, lifts beverage flavor
5. Field Data
> Shandong mother-and-baby retail chain – shower project
> Flow: 6 L/min, raw Cl₂ 0.6 mg/L
> Load: 20 g ZONE strips
> After 30 days continuous use, mean outlet Cl₂ 0.02 mg/L, skin-complaint rate down 92 %.
6. Use & Replacement Tips
- First use: Rinse 30 s to remove trace surface powder—no long soak needed.
- Service life: Household bathing 10 g/person/6 months; commercial pools test quarterly, replace when outlet Cl₂ > 0.1 mg/L.
- Eco-disposal: Spent media is mainly CaSO₄ & CaCl₂—dispose as inert building material, no secondary pollution.
7. ZONE: Making Every Drop “Safe to Drink”
With 15 years in functional filter media, ZONE runs two plants in Shandong & Henan, yearly output 3 000 t. We hold China Ministry of Health permit (WSW 2022-00xx) and ISO 9001/14001 certificates. Beyond CaSO₃ strips, ZONE supplies KDF, alkaline ceramic balls, far-infrared mineral balls, offering tailor-made “one-cartridge-one-solution”.
